Safari Photography Tips

Capturing stunning wildlife images requires preparation, patience, and technique. These safari photography tips will help you make the most of your game drives.

Shoot Golden Hours

Early morning (6-8am) and late afternoon (4-6pm) provide the best natural light. Midday sun creates harsh shadows.

Use Telephoto Lens

A 200-400mm lens is ideal for safari photography to capture distant animals without disturbing them.

Continuous Autofocus

Set camera to AI Servo/Continuous AF mode to track moving subjects. Use burst mode (3-5 fps).

Practice Patience

Find a good position, stay still, and be ready. Keep your camera on and settings ready at all times.

Increase ISO When Needed

Push ISO higher (1600-6400) for faster shutter speeds. Use minimum 1/500s for animals.

Focus on the Eyes

Always ensure the animal's eyes are sharp and in focus. A sharp eye creates emotional connection.

Recommended Safari Gear

Camera

DSLR/mirrorless with fast AF, 20MP+, weather sealing

Lenses

200-400mm telephoto, 70-200mm, 24-70mm
